Every three minutes a woman will be diagnosed with breast cancer and every 12 minutes a woman will die from it. Early detection is key to overcoming breast cancer. Ask your doctor today if you need a mammogram.
Things to Remember About Mammograms
• Simply being a woman and getting older puts you at risk for breast cancer
• Just because your doctor says you need a mammogram, doesn't mean you have cancer
• Mammograms can detect early stages of breast cancer, when it's easier to treat
• A mammogram is an x-ray of the breast and can find tumors that are too small to feel during a breast exam
• Women over the age of 40 should have a mammogram every year
• Female Medicare beneficiaries age 40 and older, Medicare will pay for one screening mammogram per year
• If you are a woman on disability and Medicare and you have not received a mammogram this year, call the National Cancer Institute's Cancer Information Service toll-free at 800-4-CANCER (800-422-6237) for information about a mammography center near you
