COLUMBIA, Mo.—Today Primaris promotes a progressive approach toward improving patient safety by signing a statement of support for the Just Culture Collaborative. By supporting the collaborative, Primaris joins the Missouri Center for Patient Safety (MOCPS) and other state health care leaders.

The Just Culture Collaborative is a MOCPS project to establish an understanding of why medical errors happen and improve methods for preventing them. The project is particularly notable in that it brings together both health care regulators and the professionals that they regulate.

“Primaris truly believes in the importance of this project. The work that the Just Culture Collaborative is about to embark in can – and should – play a vital role in shaping the future of Missouri health care,” said Richard A. Royer, Primaris CEO. “Real solutions are needed to strengthen safety in Missouri’s medical culture."

“In medicine, the consequences of human error can be severe. The most common approach to dealing with these mistakes is to punish the person who made the mistake,” said Becky Miller, executive director of MOCPS. “But often the problem is with the system. In situations where nine out of 10 people would have made the same mistake, punishment does not make sense.”

But while punitive environments have faults, Miller said a totally blame-free environment is equally ineffective at holding individuals accountable.

The Just Culture Collaborative was launched at the Primaris headquarters in Columbia on Friday, Sept. 14. It is made possible by a grant from the National Council of State Nursing Boards. For more information, visit www.mocps.org.
