Now’s the time to shop for Medicare drug plans
Medicare Part D’s open enrollment period begins Nov. 15
COLUMBIA, Mo.—Holiday shopping season may officially begin the day after Thanksgiving, but experts say that those using Medicare for prescription drug coverage should begin shopping for plans now.
Each year Medicare opens a small window from Nov. 15 until Dec. 31. During this period, those eligible can enroll in one of many Medicare drug plan offered in Missouri. It also is the only sure opportunity to change the plan they are already using.
Plan choices made now take effect on Jan. 1, 2008, and can only be changed in special circumstances until the next enrollment period.
“Even if you already have coverage through Medicare, it is important to use this opportunity. So much can change in a year – medical needs, drug needs, finances – that it is really worth it to ensure your old plan is still best,” said Carol Beahan, director of CLAIM.
CLAIM provides free and confidential Medicare counseling to Missourians. Trained volunteer counselors work locally to help people understand program options, benefits and other issues.
For 2008, there are 52 Medicare drug plans available in Missouri. Nationally, the average plan premium is $25. Comparisons can be made on the Medicare Web site, www.medicare.gov. Assistance may also be acquired through CLAIM counselors. Call toll-free, 1-800-390-3330 to request an appointment.
The nonprofit CLAIM program receives financial assistance in part through a grant from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the federal Medicare agency. Funding is administered through the Missouri Department of Insurance. Services are provided by the Columbia-based health care firm Primaris.
