Surgical Care Improvement Project

Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP)
Over the last three years, hospitals working with Primaris in SCIP made dramatic strides in improving surgical patient care. Between January 2005 and March 2007, participating hospitals:
- Reduced ineffective antibiotic use following surgery by 34 percentage points
- Maintained optimal body temperature in 84 percent of colorectal surgery patients at conclusion of the project, versus only 50 percent at its start.
There are over 30 million major operations each year in the U.S. Patients who experience a postoperative complication have increased length of stay, hospital costs and mortality. Occurrence of 30-day complications reduced median patient survival by 69 percent and complications are associated with average increase in payment of $7645 (54 percent) per patient.
Primaris made some impressive progress in improving surgical care in Missouri over the last three years, but there is still much work to be done. Primaris will continue to work with select hospitals on reducing surgical complications by implementing evidenced-based guidelines for appropriate antibiotic selection and timing, appropriate hair removal, venous thromboembolism prophylaxis, continued use of beta blockers, glucose control and immediate postoperative normothermia.
